First phase of CSV Continental Cup begins in Chile

 
Esteban Grimalt won the 2016 CSV Continental Cup to qualify for Rio 2016
Coquimbo, Chile, January 31, 2019 – Chile will take on Uruguay, and Colombia will face Venezuela when the men’s and women’s CSV Continental Cup first phase pools in Coquimbo, Chile reach their conclusion on February 1.

The winners of each respective gender will advance to the FIVB Continental Cup Final that will take place in June 2020 and earn the winners a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games. 

Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt, and Gaspar Lammel and Ignacio Zavala will take on Uruguay’s Mauricio Vieyto and Marco Cairus, and Hans Hannibal and Gaston Baldi in the best of three matches.

In the women’s final Colombia will be represented by Diana Ríos and Yuli Ayala, and Andrea and Claudia Galindo, while Venezuela feature Norisbeth Agudo and Gabriela Brito, and Diana Ramírez and Yonnielis Camacho.

The CSV Continental Cup is made up of three phases. In the first phase 12 teams were divided into three groups of four, with the winner of each group advancing directly to the final.  

Four years ago the Grimalt cousins won the men’s tournament, while Agudo and Olaya Perez Pazo joined them at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games by winning the women’s tournament.
